Woman ‘Liberation’ has only Caused Misery

image

A society where men and women are bombarded with a variety of sexual imagery at all times of the day weather on televisions, billboards, newspapers, or magazines will lead inevitably to widespread sexual agitation.

Such societies implicitly encourage citizens to compete in latest fashions that vie to fetishize certain parts of their bodies. For women the pressure continues to be tall, slim and possess bee-sting lips alongside the almost seasonal pressures.

With opportunities abound for people to meet each other via speed-dating, singles nights lonely-heart ads, nightclubs. Add to this the fact that a number of Romantic Novels, soap operas and movies have established a widespread idea that it is possible to meet the love of one’s life while offering an espresso, catching a train, or attending a lecture on the history of 20th century armed struggle in Bolivia.

The sexual agitation excited can then be satisfied by a growing number of ways, all of which are based on the core concept of freedom to choose how to live, use one’s body and how to satisfy the urge. Those ways can then include satisfaction via pornographic material, one night stands, visiting prostitutes, swinging strip-clubs, long term fidelity marriage, sexual assault and child abuse. Therefore the manner will depend solely on one’s predilections and we soon have the potential for absolute sexual chaos.

Is it any wonder that societies that fit the model outlined find themselves at the mercy of rising rates of sexual crimes, both petty and violent? The UK already has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Europe, rates of new sexually transmitted infection cases are reaching pandemic levels. A woman is raped every three minutes in Britain and the numbers on the child sex offenders register are estimated at 230,000 with 3,400 paedophiles currently serving sentences in the UK. In the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute. That results in 78 rapes each hour, 1872 rapes each day, 56,160 rapes each month, and 683,280 rapes each year.

Islam arranged the public life through the segregation between men and women. In this way the role of men and women is clearly defined and no gender struggle took place in Islamic history. Islam organised public life through regulating the occasion where men and women need to meet together to fulfill their basic needs. In contrast western societies regulate societal life through the removal of obstacles and through the necessity of consent. Such consent pervasive and all-encompassing agitation of the sexual instinct in public manifests itself in a number of unwanted results.

  4. Balance in all ways God my friend.. Repression of human nature also leads to aggression.. Violence and war.. As modern science evidences.. I for one am happy not to know or see about stuff of sex until later age towards adulthood and monogamy is my natural predisposition but I also understand that I am not necessarily the rule of other human beings.. So yes.. Balance.. No different than planets staying in orbit my friend.. Imran..:)

    • The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau report Child Maltreatment 2010 found that 16% of young people aged 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized in that year, and over the course of their lifetime, 28% of young people in the US, aged 14 to 17, had been sexually victimized.

“Adult retrospective studies show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18. This means there are more than 42 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse in the US,” said the CAC.

The estimate of 78,000 rapes per year was calculated using data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales, now administered by the Office for National Statistics.

The survey data also shows that in 2011/12 one in five females aged between 16 and 59 had been the victim of a sexual offence or attempted ofeence since the age of 16. Among males the figure was 2.7%.

4.6% of females – or approximately one in 20 – said they had been the victim of rape or attempted rape since the age of 16, falling slightly to 3.8% when attempted rape is excluded.

Speaking in response to the publication of the figures, Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said, “All sexual offences are abhorrent. Very tough sentences are available to the courts for those who commit the most serious offences including a new mandatory life sentence which we have introduced for anyone convicted of a second very serious sexual or violent crime.”

Data compiled by the Ministry of Justice also showed the conviction rates and outcomes of court proceedings for sexual offence cases.

In 2011 the conviction rate for rape against a female was 39.7%, just below the 45.2% rate for rape against a male. The aggregate rate across all sexual offences was 60.3%.

Of cases completed by the end of 2011, 55.9% of rape defendants were found guilty (compared to 61.6% of defendants in all sexual offence cases). 42.3% of rape defendants were found not guilty, while the remaining 1.8% of cases were discharged, terminated early or had an other outcome.

  7. My Dear Imran, You have spoken of the basic needs of Woman. From what You have written, it would seem that Only Sex, and maybe Security, are the basic needs.

Let me take Your Mother, Wife, Sister, Daughter. Don’t You think that they have Minds of their Own? Don’t You think that their Freedom has to be respected? What they Say be respected? As I see it, in Your circles, Woman is allowed to Speak, Move and even Think ‘Within a certain Circle’ Allowed them by Males. Women are supposed to remain within those limits, drawn by Men.

If Bikinis and Less are Stupidities of one kind, covering up a person is another.

Is it not all in the Mind? In the Family, in the House, Relatives live and Move about Without the Burkha. Are evil things happening there? In the House and Family?

Women go about for Creams and many different kinds of dresses ONLY BECAUSE MEN WANT THAT.

    Hearty Regards.

    • In the religious traditions of Orthodox Christianity and Islam, women’s roles have been widely contested. There are a variety of differences between the two religion’s theological and practical requirements for female believers, but there is also a great deal of commonality between the roles and customs that Muslim and Orthodox Christian women uphold. By examining the particularities of each religion’s teachings about women, it will be easy to draw stronger distinctions and parallels between the two.

      • No. Isn’t think anywhere in my comment I mentioned that and being a woman myself I would never state these thoughts. I was agreeing to what you’ve written and added that with the change in civilisation we shouldn’t be dependent on religion but our own rationality to decide our roles and freedom. This isn’t some race where we’ve to pull someone backward but should support every human to achieve more and more.

      • Ok, Honey, I accept Your point that You are one with me in this. Glad and Thanks.

Disagree with You when You say: “we shouldn’t be dependent on religion but our own rationality to decide our roles and freedom.”

Rationality. Thinking. Today’s rationality is tomorrow’s religion, or, yesterday’s rationality is today’s religion!

The thing is that Religion is not at fault. It is What is passed as religion that causes problems.

In India, for Years and Years, they were giving very young children Oil and Ghee (Clarified butter), Honey, etc, in the name of ‘Wisdom.’ Modern science teaches Us to avoid all that. For this, We cannot blame ‘Wisdom!’

What was practiced in the name of Wisdom might be wrong; and what is being taught and practiced in the name of religion can be wrong.

We Can NEVER do away with Religion. It is just a system of relationships. Please peruse: https://lovehappinessandpeace.wordpress.com/2014/05/14/religion-what-it-is-not/ and its sequels.

        MORE:

We HAVE to choose what is Right or Wrong for another. Any parent is constantly doing it for the child, and as there ARE things called Right and Wrong, in Teaching them to the Generations, We ARE making them Choose, and Rightly so!

        Hearty Regards. 🙂

      • I agree. Our religion is more like a lifestyle and a part of our civilisation. The guiding force. We can’t blame it. But the religion is created by human only and if there’s any drawback or isn’t modified as per the needs of time I.e outdated we’ve to use our rationality and wisdom in deciding the things. And yes our personal rationality may go wrong and I agree to you at this point the society, religion, parents, and natural forces act in a relationship to guide a human to a positive path. Moreover there’s no absolute right or wrong it changes as per time space and situations. It’s great talking to you. 😊.

      • You are putting too many points at one go, my Dear Honey.

Religion can never become Outdated. It is constantly evolving. And rationality is used to comprehend and execute its teachings/finding/Truths.

Evidently You have not gone through the link I sent You. As it carries a whole lot of sequels, it would take quite some time for anybody to peruse.

In my posts, I have shown that Our Relationship with God is part of Religion.

The Existence of God, our acknowledgement of that fact, the desire on BOTH sides, (God’s and man’s) to Communicate and to Relate, means that Religion is NOT JUST RATIONALIZATION! There is Mysticism Involved.

As for No Absolute Right or Wrong, simple question: When is it Right to Rape a woman?

In all this, I would say that subjects like Religion and Philosophy are Life-time studies. One cannot hurry through them.

        Love and Regards.

  8. It’s surprising that you can speak about womens’ liberation WITHOUT understanding what it is about. The sexual imagery and culture you have written about is the exact same reason FEMINISTS are fighting the OBJECTIFICATION OF WOMEN’S BODIES IN THE MEDIA- ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Women’s objectification by the way, is a product of MISOGYNY, not feminism or liberation as you call it. The GOAL of women’s liberation is to end PATRIARCHAL structures in the society that treat women as meat that exist only to cater to male desires. Their goal is not flirting with mean wearing mini skirts! Although doing that doesn’t mean they deserve to be punished for that cause its their human right to do whatever they want, without harming another life.

And before you start comparing how great Islamic segregation is and how we are better than the West, quoting statistics from here and there IGNORING THE TERRIBLE STATE OF WOMEN IN INDIA, PAKISTAN AND THE ENTIRE MIDDLE EAST…. let me tell you, violence against women is a global phenomenon and I don’t think how rapes happening in UK make rapes in India of less significance.
Besides, this is a women’s issue, so I think it’s safe to say that you must hear about it from women first!

I will share some crucial resources that can help you understand what feminism is and specially what INTERSECTIONAL FEMINISM IS…
    http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/01/why-our-feminism-must-be-intersectional/

And other very important point is that Allah and the religion created by man are two different things. Allah made earth, man made boundaries… Allah wanted human to be rational and empathetic, man wanted divisions and leadership; if this wasn’t true, Shia’s and Sunni’s wouldn’t exist!
I don’t believe one is better or worse than the other. What is between me and Allah, no one can tell me how to connect with Him. Yes, the Holy Quran is my guidebook but DID YOU KNOW THAT THE SHARIA SYSTEM STARTED 3 centuries AFTER THE PASSING OF OUR HOLY PROPHET? So before you sing praises of segregation, look at the other side of the picture as well or probably in the times of our Prophet’s (MPBUH) life.
    http://www.islamawareness.net/Shariah/sh_article005.html

I hope this helps and please stop posting ignorant messages like this because Indian Muslim men are already pretty crappy when it comes to womens human rights… such messages will only reinforce ignorant beliefs. You have a great platform to spread good messages that can contribute to ending violence and gender inequality. But if not, stick to other topics that you know something about.
Women’s liberation JUST ISN’T YOUR CUP OF TEA!

🙂 Nothing personal 🙂 Have a great week.

    • For the last two thousand years or so, Eve has represented the fundamental character and identity of all women. Through Eve’s words and actions, the true nature of women was revealed; her story tells men what women are really like.

Eve represents everything about a woman a man should guard against. In both form and symbol, Eve iswoman, and because of her, the prevalent belief in the West has been that all women are by nature disobedient, guileless, weak-willed, prone to temptation and evil, disloyal, untrustworthy, deceitful, seductive, and motivated in their thoughts and behaviour purely by self-interest.

No matter what women might achieve in the world, the message of Genesis warns men not to trust them, and women not to trust themselves or each other. Whoever she might be and whatever her accomplishments, no woman can escape being identified with Eve, or being identified as her.

In the West, the story of Eve has served over the centuries as the principal document in support of measures and laws to curtail and limit the actions, rights, and status of women. The Pseudo-St. Paul, for example, in his Pastoral Epistle to St. Timothy, could cite Genesis as the reason why women should not be allowed to teach or to tell a man what to do:

For I do not allow woman to teach, or to exercise authority over men; but she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
      (1 Timothy 2:12-14)

The early Christian theologian Tertullian (c. 155/160-220 CE) reminded women that they all share Eve’s “ignominy…of original sin and the odium of being the cause of the fall of the human race”:

Do you not believe that you are (each) an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives on even in our times and so it is necessary that the guilt should live on, also. You are the one who opened the door to the Devil, you are the one who first plucked the fruit of the forbidden tree, you are the first who deserted the divine law; you are the one who persuaded him whom the Devil was not strong enough to attack. All too easily you destroyed the image of God, man. Because of your desert, that is, death, even the Son of God had to die.
(The Apparel of Women, Book I, Chapt. 1)

During the Middle Ages, St. Bernard of Clairvaux could claim in his sermons, without contradiction, that Eve was “the original cause of all evil, whose disgrace has come down to all other women.”

This perception of Eve has endured with remarkable tenacity, and persists today as a major stumbling-block in attempts by women to correct gender-based inequalities between the sexes. Consciously or unconsciously, it continues to serve as the ultimate weapon against women who wish to challenge male hegemony.

It is so deeply rooted in the socio-religious psyche of Western civilization that attempts to discredit it, or dismiss it, or simply ignore it as self-serving patriarchal fiction and myth-making have met with little success. One strategy has been to adopt a revisionist approach to the story itself and to re-read it, and re-interpret it, in feminist terms. It has been argued that Genesis 2-3 is not inherently patriarchal and efforts have been made to recover it from centuries of misogynist reading.

Phyllis Trible, Professor of Sacred Literature at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, for example, holds that far from being a secondary or dependent being, Eve is in fact the “culmination” of creation [seeBIBLIOGRAPHY.

The argument that the order of creation, in which Adam was created first and Eve second, indicates hierarchy and therefore Adam’s superiority ignores the fact that animals were created before Adam. As Adam is superior to the animals, then the hierarchy of creation should be reversed, and Eve seen as God’s ultimate creation.

  9. And yes, I forgot to add….
If violence against women in UK or USA is a result of single nights out or male and female interaction as you suggested… why is there extreme crime in Middle East, India and Pakistan…specifically within Muslim cultures?
Why Syrian child brides are better for you because that is arranged by the family?
Why marital rape by Muslim men is just the norm of our brothers?
Why instead of blaming the rapist, the victim gets blamed and murdered in Muslim communities?

Quoting statistics doesn’t change the fact that violence against women is denying their human right to live the life as they like.
And what you said about segregation…you completely forgot that OUR LAST PROPHET, THE ONE WHO BROUGHT US THE HOLY QURAN HAD A LOVE MARRIAGE!!!
They did NOT meet through parents like strangers! They were NOT segregated and Bibi Khadijah was a famous, wealthy successful business women- exactly what women’s liberation stands for!
You have the right to believe whatever you may want but before spreading such half knowledge on the internet, please stop demonizing the west and praising Muslim culture for WRONG reasons.

Violence towards women and forcing them against their will is not permitted by Islam. Care for widows, orphans, and the poor is one of Islam’s strongest teachings. Unfortunately, many women are oppressed, However, this is a global issue and not just Islamic oppression. Prevalence of abuse of women is not higher among Muslims than among non-Muslims.

It is good to see people now-a-days defending the notion of religion as a good thing as number of such people is receding day by day. But I am unable to find in the article under discussion as to where the author has “spoken of the basic needs of Woman”. The article seems to be highlighting how moral values have collapsed in the West (and the westernized world at large) and how women are being increasingly objectified in the name of their ‘liberation’, or how the display of “sexual instinct in public manifests itself in a number of unwanted results”
Anyway, I really want to know where you have read that Muslim “Woman is allowed to Speak, Move and even Think ‘Within a certain Circle’ Allowed them by Males” or that they “are supposed to remain within those limits, drawn by Men”. It may stand true for Hinduism, Christianity or Judaism, but in Islam, the circles for the conduct of all, both men and women, are drawn by God, not “men”. Men have absolutely no authority to allow or disallow anything, it is all decided by the One who has created both men and women. Moreover, I would like to know that “certain circle” limit that I am supposed to speak, move or think within that you know but I don’t despite being a Muslim woman.
Further I want to know how “covering” oneself is a stupidity! Even if we go by the secular scientific notions, as man started to evolve from a primitive to a civilized age, he started to cover himself up more and more completely and elaborately, leaving the leaves and skins behind that covered him only scantily by inventing the cloth that can cover him sufficiently. So, do you think that man was actually developing in stupidity by doing so? As for your reservations about the Muslim women covering themselves up from head to toe, please give me just one example as to what is it that a “burkha” prevents a woman from doing or accomplishing? just one thing that a woman in jeans/skirts or without burkha can do but a woman with burkha cannot (except for attracting vulgar comments, vulgar sighs, and vulgar eyes!).
It is paradoxical to see that on one hand you seem to be criticizing the fact that “Women go about for Creams and many different kinds of dresses ONLY BECAUSE MEN WANT THAT.” while on the other hand, you are supporting this very notion by criticizing the women who do not dress up as per men’s wishes to give their eyes a continuous feast but restrict that male gaze by covering themselves up, letting men see only what they choose to allow them to see.
Please check the link below to understand the purpose behind wearing a burkha or hijab. And yea, please get rid of the misconception that it is imposed on Muslim women by men. No, it is a religious obligation ordained by God, and therefore a religious duty that others may not believe in but should respect it as it is her social/cultural/human/individual right as well. I hope you would not question the God’s right to do so because, as you said “We HAVE to choose what is Right or Wrong for another. Any parent is constantly doing it for the child”, so God being our Creator (if you believe in Him as I do) has even a greater right to do so.

I think all your reservations about religion are based on your perception of it as something “created by human only”. But to your dismay, it is wrong honey. Anything created by humans cannot be called religion because the soul of religion is Divine. There have been a lot of ideologies propounded by humans but they are not called religions. Religion is the way to God (for those who believe) and none can reveal it except God Himself.

Things are the other way round dear. Feminism has rather helped spread this sexual imagery and culture all over the world by celebrating the women sexuality and women bodies through display of them on the streets in the name of “women liberation”. I wonder whether women liberation means liberation from the clothes!

It is confusing that your comments sound anti-Islamic whereas your name sounds like Muslim. Anyway, that’s your personal choice and you are free to choose and follow what you like, but since you have tried to impose Feminism as a superior ideology compared to Islam, I would like to make a comparative analysis. Let me clear that no society on earth can be perfect or absolutely free of evils or wrongs since it is human beings who constitute any society and to err is human. It applies to Muslim societies as well. But that does not mean that the fault lies with the Islam or any ideology for that reason as the merits of a vehicle cannot be judged on the basis of its driver.

Well, first of all, do you know that Islam has been the pioneer in the matter of speaking up for women’s rights? It elevated the status of women and empowered them with the rights such as the right to earn, the right to own property, the right to choose the life partner, the right to initiate divorce, the right to inheritance, the right to education, the right to remarry – the rights that have been denied in other cultures even till recently, and that’s too without requiring women to launch any movement to acquire them, or without any ‘legislation’. Prince Charles also acknowledges this fact in his speech at the Sheldonian Theatre, as he says: “The rights of Muslim women to property and inheritance, to some protection if divorced, and to the conducting of business, were rights prescribed by the Qur’an twelve hundred years ago… In Britain at least, some of these rights were novel even to my grandmother’s generatoin!”.

Islam can be said to have begun the first feminist movement by talking about and granting women’s rights and abolishing a number of practices against them within no time in a world that has lately been still debating “whether woman had a soul and whether woman was to be considered human!”. It is not difficult to realize that what feminism has achieved after over more than a century’s efforts (though it is debatable again whether it could/should be called achievement) is far less than what Islam accomplished within no time. What feminists seem to achieve after a long struggle was readily granted by Islam fourteen hundred years ago without any effort on the part of women. Islam took no time to completely abolish female infanticide from amongst the pagan Arab world whereas in the world characterized by all sorts of feminisms, female feticide is on the rise. Islam founded a society based on strict moral values and conduct to ensure the security and safety of women, forbidding men even to look at them lest some evil intent may arise; whereas the societies characterized by feminism and all its entailing liberties pose all kinds of threat to women ranging from casual eve-teasing to brutal rapes and murders.

Do you know that Feminism has been hijacked, earlier by colonizers, and today by capitalists to further their own interests? Colonizers used it to destroy the indigenous cultures and societies to further their colonial interest, and capitalism lured women out of homes because they provide cheaper labour, as well as the increased supply of labour eventually resulting in overall fall in the wages. Moreover, the unrestricted display of bodies on the streets in the name of Feminsm or ‘liberation’ also encourages the unhealthy competition regarding appearances, thus forcing individuals to become more conscious about looks, giving impetus to the fashion and cosmetics industry, the real players behind the game.

Now coming to your comment about our beloved Prophet’s marriage with Khadija, it was not a love marriage in today’s sense, and it is demeaning of his stature to say so. They never went on dates, never met or talked like lovers before marriage. It was just that khadija got impressed by his character, his honesty, revealed to her by her servant who went with Prophet on business expedition, and thus sent her proposal for marriage, and he accepted it since she was also a pious and respectable lady. It’s true that “They did not meet through parents like strangers”, but they did not even meet at all. Moreover, the parents of both of them weren’t alive that time and hence they were living independently. “They were not segregated” does not either stand true here as societies of those times were characterized by traditional values with no opportunities for men and women to come freely in contact with each other such as happens in our modern societies with “co-ed” systems of education, common and shared workplaces, entertainment spots with rampant gender mingling.
Yes, she was a famous, wealthy, successful tradeswoman, thus negating the modern notion that one needs to defy the morals and values, or traditional gender roles in order to become successful or independent!

  15. Hello, Imran. It seems your post has generated a lot of discussion … and not surprisingly. This is an issue that many people worldwide have very strong feelings about. I for one am very glad to be a ‘modern’ woman. I think for myself and all my actions are done because I choose to do them. I don’t have anyone telling me how to dress or handling my assets and money instead of me. I chose my own career and I chose my own marriage partner – we have been married for 45 years because we are happy together and both of us want to stay together. We had six children because we both wanted them.
Freedom means so much more that the choice of dress.
I’ve read many of the comments above and I particularly like the very first one of Swamiyedsudas. He says, ‘Women have minds of their own’. Women in the U.K. and U.S. fought long and hard to have that belief accepted and will not have it taken away from them. Before that in the U’K’, on their marriage, women’s claims to any property or other assets was taken away from them – for good! That was just one aspect of ‘a woman’s place’ at that time. Total subservience to men is not for us. Equality is the key word. Women have minds of their own, and can make their own decisions and take thie place amongst the workforce of the counrty – or not.
As they choose: That is what women’s liberation means to me.
These are my own views, and I respect the right of every individual to have theirs – as you know, Imran.

  18. It is in the basic understanding mankind should possess that everybody has the right freedom. You wanna watch port, fine. A woman can wear a salwar-kameez and still be a CEO. A woman can wear mini skirts and still be a dignified woman. You cannot judge someone based on their clothes. Let women be free.

    • A group of people trying to be autonomous and successful at work, and to have love and sex lives in which they express their vulnerability, need, and desire, is groundbreaking and historically unprecedented. This new in-between developmental period brings these two life spheres together at a time when neither is yet firmly established.

  21. Your post is Informational and Significant too…but I disagree with the fact that a definite religion or culture should be aplauded while the other blamed for the Pitiable conditions of women…
Whether it is the “Nirbhaya gangrape” here in India or the “Kasur Sex Scandal” in Pakistan or any such violent act anywhere in the world….
The impact and pain is equal…
Its the time to change our perspective as well as efforts for women’s upliftment on a global base….

    • Islam means “Peace” – achieved when a person focuses on God, giving her entire mind, heart and soul to none other than the Creator. This liberates her from human subjection; replacing fear with self-respect; weakness with strength, and conflict with tranquility. God says in the Qur’an: “…do not fear human beings, but be in awe of Me.” (Qur’an 5:44)

Islam strongly prohibits oppression or cruelty to any individual, group or living thing in the universe. God enjoins good conduct toward women from birth to death. Verbal, psychological, emotional, sexual, and physical violence are forbidden, as are false allegations against women’s chastity and honor. Men are further reminded: “Do not annoy women as to make their lives miserable.” (Qur’an 65:6).

Prophet Muhammad said: “Only an honorable man treat women with honor and integrity. And only a mean, deceitful and dishonest man humiliates and insults women.” Referring to physical abuse, he added: “Never hit your wives, they are your partners and sincere helpers.” He exemplified this by never, ever, hitting a women or child. The Prophet guaranteed protection of the life, honor, and property of women.

“And why should you not fight in the cause of God and on behalf of those, who being weak, are ill-treated and oppressed, men, women and children whose cry is, ‘Our Lord! Rescue us from these oppressors, and raise for us, from You, one who will protect and help.'” (Qur’an 4:75)

  22. I think moderation in such segregation is a must.
Sexual crimes happen even in what is so called conservative society where men and women are almost completely segregated. Not to mention, people who are completely segregated from the other gender, will be extreme when traveling. Or they may travel to practice such things. Things that they can’t do but deep down they want to experience.
Moderation as well as education are necessities. Nice post!

  25. If this sexual agitation is, as you have put it, a natural and inevitable thing, you are saying that sexual tension between men and women cannot be eliminated. Your resolution that men and women should be segregated does not eliminate the sexual tension: it merely represses it or ideally removes opportunity for sexually deviant behaviour (which will ultimately fail as I will now relate). If you practice avoidance, you are not dealing with the inner struggle, the core question of how men and women can coexist with innate sexual desire but without committing horrifying acts of rape. Do you really believe that the only way to stop rape is to stop men from being able to meet women? That’s really giving men a bad rap. Teaching consent at least confronts the problem at hand- that you will inevitability find yourself in the presence of a woman you may find attractive and want to have sex with. At the very least, in this scenario, there will be no rape if the woman consents, right? Infinitely better than a man who, having been unable to satisfy his raging desires, gropes a girl running in the midst of a bombing. I’m sorry to say it but Islam seems to have fostered this sort of response to women. Just read the most recent news on the refugee crisis.
I will forever disagree with the notion that women’s bodies on billboards are the problem; it is men’s INTENTIONS and ACTIONS that result in rape. In a world of temptation, it is not the fault of breast or penis but of the man or woman who cannot control him/herself. Sin is committed by the person, not the object of desire. Any blame-shifting is denial, which actually does the OPPOSITE of liberation for women.
Finally, what’s wrong with objectification in the media is not that women should be covered from head to toe but that the it encourages a certain way of looking at women that strips them of their humanity. It is about changing the viewer’s perspective, not the subject.

I have to say that I can’t wholly agree with the argument because when viewed through such a small eyeglass gives all the power to men and all the blame to women. I am a feminist and feel that women should be given the same rights, they are not a second class citizen, there are few things that women cannot do as well and in some cases, better than men. I think it is difficult to quote figures for rape and sex crimes in different countries as they are not classed or reported in the same way so it is not simple to find figures that are fair or accurate.

I do agree that aspects of Christian society will seem strange to one coming from an Islamic society and a secular society is one that is born out of many religions and beholden to none. It but there is muddy water when you refer to ‘western’ and ‘islamic’ as you are mixing a region with a religion and I think there is enough misunderstanding about that.

And please do not get me wrong, I do have an understanding of the Islamic religion, and was raised catholic. I may not live a religious life, but I have an interest in it and what it stands for, the motivations etc.

With regard to your opening stanza on the ills of how people meet their potential partners, this is born out of necessity, we do not have strong familial ties, we move, to another town, county, even country so we don’t have the same way of meeting people that we once did. We have no networks, we work longer hours, and live further away from where we work because we can’t afford to live closer which makes meeting people, even garnering friendships more difficult. I am lucky, I met me partner through friends, although ironically, I did end up living at the opposite end of the country from him for the first 3 years of our relationship. And I would not want to be single again. It doesn’t look great.

And other things you touched on do come down to education, agan reporting differently, I don’t think that for example, teenage pregnancy is suddenly rampant, and there is certainly more education out there for people, but that again it comes down to reporting. My fathers generation in Ireland, would send their daughters, sisters, nieces away to have their baby. It wasn’t something ever discussed and the baby was whisked away. Never. Reported. This is the difficulty in these situations. And I guess can help with your argument that sociality, western culture does not hold things like sex and marriage especially highly. Or it does, but not behind closed doors. But then, our society, like you also pointed out, is open to be discussed, and dissected by the world. In a way that many other cultures are not. And for a moment to imagine that the worlds presented in ‘Days of our Lives’ or ‘Americas Sweethearts’ is actually real is more than a little naive and I would hope that people don’t genuinely think that any more than stereotypes from any given culture globally.

The fact is, no matter what has happened so far, I am proud to call myself a feminist, I am thankful that the Suffragettes over 100 years ago, stood up and help society accountable for how they treated women – we have had Queens ruling, in Europe and in a matter of a couple of centuries women aren’t even considered intelligent enough to vote. Any ills can be placed at the feet of the victorians. Women’s place has evolved in the home and in the workplace as needed, if the population is low, women suddenly find that they are needed more as a mother figure, men are away fighting, well then we can go out and work. Now we are in a society where women work, and live independently of their family and or need of a husband (if they so desire a husband) which also allows for pursuit of alternate lifestyles. This is both because we have such an over population globally, but also because we don’t have the money, we need to make our own way in the world. But even then, as a woman… see link at top, you can never win.

  29. I think you need to take into account that the concept of feminism is becoming increasingly subjective and is largely dependent on the individual, there is not a unified meaning as, in any society, there are independent thinkers. You cannot singularly blame ‘women’s liberation’ for the many things happening. There was also an instance when the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) told a male muslim to lower his gaze and did not go and tell the woman off. Each individual should be responsible for their actions, especially for those who are of age and can think and differentiate for themselves, to do otherwise diminishes men from taking responsibility for their actions. If anything, Islam brought about rights for women in the first place in a time where it was difficult for women.

      Abstract
The history of the Women’s Liberation Movement has been told in a very particular way. Often written by those directly involved, it depicts a rapid rise of the movement, followed by an equally dramatic decline, caused in part by lack of structure. Historians also divide the movement into two polarized sides, socialist and radical, seeing radical feminists as instigating the movement’s fall. Through a detailed study of a Women’s Liberation Movement organization—the London Women’s Liberation Workshop—this article challenges this picture. Focusing on the broad range of issues discussed, and the diversity and vibrancy of debate, it shows that the movement always had a form of structure, which was constantly evolving, and it was never clearly divided into two opposing sides. Instead, we see a movement which was very far from defunct by the end of the 1970s, for the changes and challenges it went through were a part of its development, not its demise.
